Now in its 18th year, the Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago's Union Park will once again present another varied bill of veteran artists and soon-to-be break-out acts. Headliners Black Pumas, Jamie XX, and Alanis Morissette top Friday, July 19, Saturday, July 20, and Sunday, July 20, respectively. The festival also brings with it an impressive 40% representation of female artists among them Brittany Howard, Muna, Sudan Archives, Bratmobile, and Jessica Pratt. As always there is a focus on the local music scene of Chicago and this year is no exception. Improv group Black Duck, former poet laureate Kara Jackson, and indie rockers Lifeguard are a few who will be representing the city at the fest.
Here are 4 must-see acts this year:
Sunday - Green Stage 6:15 p.m. - 7:15 p.m.
The current reigning queen of disco Jessie Ware will make a rare and frankly overdue appearance back in North America and Chicago no less. Off the success of her last 2 releases, What's Your Pleasure?, and That! Feels Good!, Ware is set to bring the dance party to Union Park on Sunday evening with sultry vocals and infectious beats. When dance anthems ''Free Yourself'' ''Beautiful People'' and ''Soul Control hit the speakers you can guarantee nobody will leave this performance without a smile or with any dry clothing.
Sunday - Red Stage 3:20 p.m. - 4:10 p.m.
Boston-based band Model/Actriz brings their intense live show to the Red Stage on Sunday afternoon. Their acclaimed debut album, Dogsbody, which is packed full of abrasive guitar riffs, pulsing drums, and raw vocals loses nothing when the band hits the stage. It can be seen as a sort of controlled chaos that makes the audience fully engage with it. Lead vocalist Cole Haden can often spend the majority of their sets out in the audience delivering his unfiltered vocals to anyone he finds. It will surely be a sight to see.
Saturday - Blue Stage 4:00 p.m. - 4:45 p.m.
Indie duo Water From Your Eyes brings their interesting blend of art-pop and experimental sounds to Union Park. Vocalist Rachel Brown and guitarist Nate Amos along with a full backing band deliver catchy melodies, lush soundscapes, and heavy riffs which are topped off by Brown's dry, monotone, and humorous lyrics which can lead to some musical whiplash. One second you might be nodding your head to a harmless, fun dance song only to then be greeted by a wall of guitars and synths which drive just into the ground by the noise hitting your chest. This is the dynamic of moments that Water From Your Eyes thrives upon and will be looking forward to delivering on Saturday afternoon.
Friday - Red Stage 7:25 p.m. - 8:25 p.m.
After Jai Paul, the reclusive British artist finally decided to return after a decade-long hiatus it was a breath of fresh air. Back in 2013, his debut album leaked and everyone got a glimpse of what Paul was capable of producing with standout tracks ''Str8 Outta Mumbai'' and ''Jasmine''. And with that, he went silent. The fans garnered by the leaked music waited patiently and almost hopelessly for anything. Last year he answered those hopes with his first-ever live performances. His blend of R&B, funk, electronics, and distinct falsetto vocals can at times be mesmerizing. Now he hits Union Park for his Chicago debut and should be one for the books.
