The 17th edition of the Pitchfork Music Festival returns to Chicago’s Union Park this summer from July 21st – 23rd 2023. A pair of heavy hitters in the form of Bon Iver and The Smile headline another stacked lineup with festival favorite Big Thief as the 3rd name at the top of the bill. Recently reunited Youth Lagoon, indie darling Weyes Blood, and the reclusive King Krule make long-awaited returns to Union Park this year. R&B act Ric Wilson, DJ/producer Ariel Zetina, and singer/songwriter Sen Morimoto represent their hometown of Chicago.
Here are 5 acts not to miss over the weekend:
Sunday - Blue Stage 4:00 p.m. - 4:45 p.m.
Hardcore punk has had a bit of a resurgence in the last few years. Among the groups leading the way is Philadelphia’s Soul Glo. Their 2022 release Diaspora Problems is an incredible mix of classic hardcore, hip-hop, electronics, and other sounds. Coupled with lead vocalist Pierce Jordan’s ferocious vocal delivery that is a battle cry to anyone within earshot, Soul Glo will instantly want you to jump into mosh pit when the first chords hit. So be prepared for an intense and chaotic set when they hit the stage at Union Park.
Friday - Green Stage 8:30 p.m. - 9:50 p.m.
Radiohead members Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood’s side project The Smile being on this year's festival is a coup for the event. Even though they are a 3 piece, they still produce enough noise like their full-strength counterpart. The experimental post-punk trio will finish their summer tour in Chicago in support of their debut ‘’A Light For Attracting Attention’’. The band is also working on a follow-up album which makes their Friday night headline slot a key moment to debut new material that they have been teasing in the past months.
Nation Of Language
Friday - Red Stage 5:15 p.m. - 6:10 p.m.
Brooklyn-based band Nation of Language has been making waves with their infectious blend of post-punk, dream pop, soaring synths, and new-wave influences. They have carved out a unique sound that is both nostalgic and forward-thinking. Songs such as ‘’Across that Fine Line’’, ‘’September Again’’ and their latest single ‘’Sole Obsession’’ show their love of New Order, OMD, and Echo & The Bunnymen amongst others.
Saturday - Red Stage 7:30 p.m. - 8:25 p.m.
Natalie Mering aka Weyes Blood makes an overdue return to Pitchfork Music Festival after her last appearance in 2017. Blending insightful lyrics, folk, dreamy synths, and chamber pop instrumentation, Mering uses her soaring voice to create a haunting and atmospheric sound. Her critically acclaimed release And In Darkness, Hearts Aglow takes it all to a new level with standout songs such as ‘’God Turn Me Into a Flower’’ and ‘’It's Not Just Me, It’s Everybody’. Don’t expect a dry eye in the crowd when they hit the stage at Union Park.
Charlotte Adigery & Bolis Pupul
Saturday - Blue Stage 7:45 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
Belgian duo Charlotte Adigery & Bolis Pupul are ready to turn Union Park into a giant dance party. Their debut album ‘’Topical Dancer’’ is full of infectious hooks and electro beats which are sure to get a crowd moving. Tracks like "Thank You" and "Don't Sleep" showcase the duo's ability to create music that is both fun and thought-provoking, with lyrics that touch on themes of love, loss, and identity.
