DECEMBER 9 | INGLEWOOD—Seth Bowen covered KROQ's 28th annual Almost Acoustic Christmas for The Scenestar, noting the highs (Muse!) and lows (Queens of the Stone Age's Josh Homme kicking a photographer).
Royal Blood kicked off Night One of Almost Acoustic Christmas strong, setting the tone and leaving us wanting far MORE than their 20 minute, five-song set. If you haven't seen them live yet, you are truly missing out. They're easily one of the best live bands currently out there, with a classic rock undertone, diluted only by a tad of modern alt-rock vibes.
Judah & the Lion's infectious energy was the perfect follow-up to Royal Blood. Their sing-along set and dance party (literally) was a killer way to start the night—when most of the crowd still hadn’t yet arrived. It's incredibly obvious that they truly love being onstage. Their sound is unique, refreshing, and always positive, a perfect lead-in to Cold War Kids, who brought on Bishop Briggs for a bluesy set with incredible vocals.
Run the Jewels hit the stage next and—together with Prophets of Rage—ushered in an out-of-character, yet very welcomed hip-hop set. Fans were transported back to the '90s with such hits as Public Enemy's "Bring the Noise," Cypress Hill's "Insane in the Brain," and Rage Against the Machine's "Killing in the Name"—and all sung in unison, "Fuck you, I won't do what you told me." The political undertone did not go unnoticed, as most of the audience seemed totally engaged in the "Make America Rage Again" message on the stage's screen.
The energy level was high by the time Rise Against took the stage, and it stayed that way throughout their set. The enthusiasm seemed to dip, however, about halfway through Queens of the Stone Age's set. Singer Josh Homme told the crowd that he needed tequila to get through being there, and he also shouted a few insults. It got worse when he kicked a concert photographer (for which he has since apologized).
Thirty Seconds to Mars was a welcome reprieve, as singer Jared Leto ran around the stage wearing a Gucci cape. The band performed some older favorites, including "The Kill," as well as new single "Walk on Water." Thirty Seconds to Mars, who hasn't released a new album in four years, teased that "something" (an album, perhaps?) is coming "soon," along with a tour (including a show at the Forum) next year.
But the true star of the night was Muse. The insanely talented Matt Bellamy, Chris Wolstenholme, and Dominic Howard brought the evening to the next level, and it was hands down one of the best live performances I've ever seen. Their talent—both as individuals and as a group—is downright incredible. Muse's onstage energy was palpable, ending the night on a very high note.
All in all, Night One of KROQ's Almost Acoustic Christmas was one for the books. It was a night full of rock 'n' roll, which is always a good thing, but it was even better since a portion of the proceeds goes to local charities. This year's sold-out event was definitely a holiday gem.
